Denmark, ranked in many studies as one of the happiest countries in the world, goes to polls on June 18. One Prime Minister-hopeful candidate though is attracting the most attention. 51-year-old John Erik Wagner campaign posters have been termed as “penis posters” as they show him wearing nothing but a cowboy hat and a gun holster standing in a seductive pose.
While the election is chiefly being held between Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt of Social Democrats and opposition leader and former premier Lars Løkke Rasmussen of Venstre. Wagner himself is in the running for the third time and has admitted his novel strategy is to surprise people with his election posters.
“It helps to look good if you want to be in government and people say I have a nice body, so I thought, ‘This is me, here I am.’ I wanted to get my name out there,” he has said in an interview. Not wanting to be known only for his raunchy posters (‘Most Danes are okay with nudity’), Wagner also has his election manifesto ready to woo voters. He has promised to scrap unemployment benefits and introduce a basic income for everyone with the populace working for six months and taking the next six months off. Another important manifesto point is to make visits to the dentist free of cost that currently costs DKK 300 or Rs 3000 approximately for a single session.
Wagner has an active Facebook page because he prefers it to having a website. Here, apart from the usual election-related paraphernalia, one can find more manifesto promises, selfies with his dog Dolly and some pictures of him in full clothes.
We don’t know how the election will end for Wagner but for sheer cheek and for grabbing attention with a truly out-of-the-box solution, we give full marks to John Erik Wagner.
